In 2018, former prosecutor Hillary Blout wrote and secured the passage of the nation’s first Prosecutor-Initiated Resentencing (PIR) law, allowing California prosecutors to evaluate past sentences. For the People was born after the law passed in order to lead the implementation of PIR across California, and across the country. Today, five states have passed PIR laws, with more than 1,000 people resentenced. For The People supports prosecutors to identify people in prison who can be safely released, reuniting families and strengthening communities.
Patchwork Piñata has been an ongoing partner with For The People, collaborating on a number of video projects and social media deliverables. In 2024, Patchwork Piñata and For the People teamed up to film a short documentary highlighting Assistant District Attorney of San Diego Dwain Woodley and Eric Braswell. Eric is a formerly incarcerated man who was sentenced 45-years-to-life for a non-violent crime when he was 19, and Dwain is the San Diego assistant district attorney that resentenced Eric. That documentary will be out in Spring 2025.
